The architectural world is in shock this morning following the news that one of Poland's foremost architects perished in a freak air accident yesterday in northern Spain.
Stefan Kurylowicz was one of the country's most prolific architects, building extensively in Warsaw and beyond, winning numerous awards for his designs.
He managed to set up a private office as early as the 1980s, when Poland was still hampered by communist regulations.
“He was one of the forerunners of the economic and architectural transformations in Poland,” Dr Marta Urbanska, a member of SARP (Association of Polish Architects) told thenews.pl.
“Together with his wife Ewa, he created by far the most successful architectural office in Poland - he combined tremendous architectural talent with entrepreneurial skills.
“The majority of the best buildings raised in Warsaw since 1989 were designed by his office,” Urbanska asserts, citing the Focus and Krolewska offices, as well as that of Lot Airlines, amongst his most memorable works.
Kurylowicz was also a lecturer at the Warsaw Polytechnic, where he himself had learnt his profession.
One of the architect's last actions was to donate sketches to an auction due to be held tomorrow in Warsaw in aid of the quake victims in Japan.
He is survived by his wife and two sons. (nh/pg)
