On board one of the planes was award winning architect Stefan Kuryłowicz and his colleague Jacek Syropolski. Spanish police have yet to release the names of the other two victims.

A third plane, again with two people on board, managed to land safely at the airport moments after the disaster, which saw one light aircraft come down in an airport parking lot and another in a forested area nearby.

The three planes were on their way from San Sebastian in northern Spain to Portugal. It is currently not known what caused the two planes to collide mid-air.

Weather conditions were poor, local media reports, with rain and fog sighted in the area of the crashes.

One of the victims, Stefan Kuryłowicz, won many awards for his work as an architect and taught at Warsaw Polytechnic. (pg)
