The 72 year-old former prime minister of Poland, who stood down as president of the European Parliament in January, has been admitted for tests, says his assistant, Robert Smolinski.

His colleague says that Buzek is not complaining of any particular symptoms but has been through a period of very hard work of late.

“As President of the European Parliament he often worked between 18 to 20 hours a day, and he travelled a lot. He was also working very late hours last Friday and held many meetings, " Robert Smolinski has informed.

Jerzy Buzek was prime minister of Poland between 1997 and 2001. Since 2004 he has been a member of the European Parliament representing the centre-right European People's Party (EPP) of which Poland’s Civic Platform are a part.

In January he ended a two-year stint as president of the European Parliament. (pg)
