Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) has claimed that it has identified the culprit behind an apparently pro-gay bomb scare in Warsaw in 2005.

ABW belatedly released the findings in its report for 2011, ruling out theories of a terrorist organisation and pinning the blame on a solitary man.

No one has yet been brought to justice for the incident, which brought the capital to a standstill in October 2005.

The case was suspended in February 2008, after no convincing leads were found. District prosecutors have already rejected ABW's theory, citing a lack of evidence.

Three days before the 2005 presidential elections, 14 dummy bombs were planted at various points across Warsaw, including at tram stops, on the metro and at key roundabouts.

A manifesto was sent to the editors of several newspapers, signed by “The Gay Power Brigade and the Strong Homo,” (Brigada PowerGay i Silny Pedal).

The author claimed to be fighting against discrimination towards homosexuals.

investigators even interviewed members of the conservative Law and Justice party, amid suggestions that the action might have been a provocation aimed at garnering support for the party's presidential candidate Lech Kaczynski, who had banned two gay marches while mayor of Warsaw.

According to unofficial information received by Polish public broadcaster TVP, the suspect singled out by ABW is a Warsaw journalist. However, investigators concluded that he had a solid alibi. (nh)
