The officers discovered a large amount of white powder among bananas on Wednesday at a branch of the Auchan supermarket in Katowice, southern Poland.

Auchan's management is not commenting on the find at present, while the investigation is ongoing.

However, a source told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily that the white powder was found in the supermarket's warehouse, concealed in sacks of bananas imported from Ecuador.

Earlier this week, another consignment of white powder was found at a different Auchan supermarket, this time in Raciborz, also in the southern Silesia region.

If forensic investigations confirm that the substance is indeed cocaine, it will the largest ever quantity of the drug to be seized by Silesian police, with an approximate value of 17 million zloty (4 million euro).

Investigators are currently looking into who had access to the warehouses, and who transported the bananas. (nh/pg)
