Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said those who took part in rioting in Zielona Gora, western Poland, late Sunday night, Monday morning are simply hooligans, after one of them kicked a policewoman in the jaw.

Sixteen police officers were injured and nine people arrested after rioting broke out when an unmarked police car ran over and killed a fan of the local Falubuz speedway team, during end of season celebrations of the team’s victory in the Ekstraklasa league.

“Someone who kicks a female police officer in the face is a hooligan,” said Prime Minister Tusk, who interrupted his pre-election campaign and travelled direct to Zielona Gora.

“We have to deal with two facts,” Tusk said at a press conference in the city.

“The tragic death of a man and a brutal attack on police officers who were on duty. But a tragic death cannot excuse the assault on the officers,” he said.

Police used tear gas and water canon to regain order after windows at the local police station and shop windows were broken and a petrol station was vandalised.

A female police officer, who was attempting to aid the fatally injured fan ran over by the police car was kicked in the face by an angry bystander, breaking her jaw.

According to reports, the victim of the car accident had walked out into the middle of the road, while talking on his mobile phone before the car hit him.

The investigation into the death of the fan has been made more difficult as much of the evidence at the crime scene was destroyed owing to the ensuing riots, however. (pg/nh)
