Staff at Warsaw's Military Medical Institute have told Polish Radio that the “complicated” surgery was a success, in this instance focusing on the MEP's two broken femurs.

However, owing to the seriousness of the accident, further surgery is pencilled in for next week, after which Walesa faces a long period of rehabilitation.

The MEP lost several litres of blood when his motorcycle collided with a Toyota near Plock, northern Poland.

Besides broken femurs, Walesa suffered a broken pelvis and breaks to his arms and ribs, as well as a damaged spine.

District prosecutors in Plock have appointed an expert to analyse the evidence, owing to lack of clarity surrounding culpability for the crash.

Jaroslaw Walesa is due to turn 35 on Tuesday. Thus far he has been unfit to relate his account of the accident. (nh/pg)
