The invitation came in response to Mrs Gosiewska’s personal letter to the Pope, in which she outlined her views on the crash, shared her thoughts on the loss of her only son.

The letter also asked for the Pontiff’s support to the efforts aimed at explaining all the circumstances of the events of 10 April 2010. Mrs Gosiewska also wrote about the need to set up an international commission to investigate the causes of the tragedy.

The date of the papal audience has not yet been set.

Jadwiga Gosiewska says she also wrote to US President Barack Obama but has yet to receive a reply.

Przemyslaw Gosiewski was a prominent politician of the conservative Law and Justice party. He was one of the 96 victims of the plane crash in Smolensk, western Russia, in which President Lech Kaczynski and the First Lady were also killed. (mk/jb)
