The former Solidarity leader and president of Poland was admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia.

Final tests, Wednesday, confirmed that Walesa could be discharged.

His doctors said the reason for his protracted hospitalisation had been earlier anti-biotic treatment mandatory in the case of pneumonia.

Three weeks ago Lech Walesa was admitted to the emergency ward at the hospital in Gdansk after complaining of gastric problems and running a high fever.

In 2008, the Nobel Peace Prize-winner underwent surgery in the US where he had a pacemaker fitted. (ss/pg)
