Giving preliminary results, Poland’s Central Examination Commission said 80.5 percent had passed the matura exams, which students sat in May.

The tests are a rite of passage that determines teenagers’ future to a large degree.

High school students in Poland who fail one mandatory subject can resit the exam in August.

Students who flunk more than one mandatory subject have to wait a year before taking the tests again.
