Szczerski, who is chief of staff and a senior foreign policy adviser to the Polish head of state, told public broadcaster Polish Radio on Monday that he had been given the green light from President Andrzej Duda to run for the post of deputy secretary-general of the Western military alliance.

"The president has agreed that I add my name to the pool of candidates," Szczerski said.

The name of the new deputy NATO chief to replace American Rose Gottemoeller is expected to be announced in July, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Gottemoeller is due to leave her post in October.
