Parliamentary leaders from across Central and Eastern Europe were on Wednesday due to meet in Warsaw to discuss shared history and modern challenges at an event also attended by a group of former dissidents.

Several dozen former democratic activists who opposed communism in the Balkans, the former Yugoslavia, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and the former Soviet Union were slated to join parliamentary Speakers during the meeting at the Sejm, the lower house of Poland’s parliament.

The gathering was due to be accompanied by the opening of an exhibition focusing on events 30 years ago when a landmark Polish vote heralded the collapse of communism across the region after decades of totalitarian rule.

Top Polish officials on Tuesday marked the 30th anniversary of the country’s first partially-free parliamentary elections after World War II, a historic vote that precipitated a domino effect across the region and culminated in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the break-up of the Soviet Union.
