A monument to Tadeusz Mazowiecki is to be erected in the town of Płock, north of Warsaw, the birthplace of Poland’s first non-communist prime minister after World War II.

The initiative by local organisations coincides with the upcoming 30th anniversary of the partially-free elections of June 1989, in the wake of which Mazowiecki became the head of Poland’s Solidarity-led government.

The two-metre high monument, cast in bronze, is to be unveiled in September, to mark the anniversary of a policy address by Mazowiecki to parliament in 1989.

It is to stand close to the high school which Mazowiecki attended.

Mazowiecki died in 2013, at the age of 86.
