As police patrolled the river banks, paths next to the Vistula that are popular with tourists have been closed until the alert is called off.

“The flood wave is going to roll through Warsaw on Tuesday, May 28, between 6am and 6pm,” Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski tweeted on Monday.

Emergency services “are on standby and constantly monitoring the Vistula river water level,” he added.

The Government Centre for Security (RCB) on Monday sent out text messages alerting people in the capital not to approach the river banks.

Last week, heavy rains, extreme weather and flooding hit the south of the country.
