A member of the school’s cleaning staff was shot, while an 11-year-old pupil was injured by an exploding firecracker thrown by the suspect, PAP reported. Both sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was detained by police minutes after the incident in the town of Brześć Kujawski.

“Police have secured a weapon […] The attack was carried out by an 18-year-old, who most likely used to be a student of the school,” a police official said.

The attack caused shock in the local community, according to PAP. “These things happen in American films, not in the [Polish] countryside,” said the mother of a student at the school.
