Twenty-three people have been killed and 391 hurt in 321 road accidents nationwide since Poles hit the road in droves at the end of last month, Michał Gaweł from the country’s General Police Headquarters (KGP) said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, police have stopped 1,220 drunk drivers since Tuesday, April 30, Gaweł told state news agency PAP.

Police have stepped up checks and appealed to drivers to keep their speed down as major roads were expected to clog up with vehicles on the last day of the extended May break.

With May 1 (Labour Day) and May 3 (Constitution Day) public holidays, many workplaces have given their employees time off to enjoy what has become known as the May long weekend.
