The country’s president and prime minister attended a ceremony in Warsaw during which six senior firefighters were promoted to general and many others elevated to officers.

President Andrzej Duda said during the ceremony that firefighters, both professional and volunteer, deserved praise because their service required selflessness and sacrifice.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki thanked Poland’s firefighters, saying they were admired for their perseverance and strong spirit.

Addressing the several hundred firemen gathered at Warsaw’s Piłsudski Square, Morawiecki said Polish firefighters have proved their courage and professionalism at home and abroad.

He referred to an operation in which Polish fire crews helped tackle forest fires in Sweden last summer.

Saturday marked International Firefighters' Day.
