Teachers began their protest at Roman Dmowski Roundabout, a key junction in the Polish capital, and then marched through the city’s downtown area, past the houses of parliament, to stage a rally in front of the education ministry, according to the tvn24.pl website.

Drivers had to put up with traffic tie-ups, compounded by two other smaller demonstrations in the Polish capital that day, TVN24 reported.

Thousands of schools across Poland have cancelled classes after teachers on April 8 went on a nationwide strike of unlimited duration to demand substantial pay raises.

The protest began just before end-of-school exams at various levels of education.

Poland’s government on Tuesday called on teachers to suspend their pay strike as key high school exams approached.
