However, between September 1, 2018 and April 7 this year, confirmed and suspected cases of influenza fell 18 percent year on year to under 3.7 million.

The figures were released on Wednesday during a Flu Meeting 2019 conference in Warsaw.

Doctors warn that flu can cause a range of serious complications.

Experts say that vaccinations are the most effective way of avoiding influenza, but most Poles do not take the advice.

This season the number of Poles opting to have flu jabs rose slightly, but the figure still fell short of 4 percent.
