Polish MPs are next month likely to adopt new rules on combating food waste, according to the Rzeczpospolita newspaper.

The paper has reported that, if the measures are passed, every grocery retailer with a surface area of over 250 square metres will have to give away unsold food to non-governmental organisations.

According to the daily, any shop flouting the new rules would have to pay a fine of PLN 0.10 (EUR, USD 0.03) for every kilogramme of unsold food.

The paper reported that the measures could be backed by parties from different ends of the political spectrum – an unusual move in Poland.

“Battle against throwing out food unites politicians” is how the paper summed up the story.
