Free ultrasound examinations are available to citizens aged 65 and over who have three or more risk factors.

Risk factors for abdominal aortic aneurysm include coronary heart disease, smoking, hypertension, high blood cholesterol level and being a man, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Around 30,000 patients are expected to be screened by the end of next year under the health ministry’s Polkard programme for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a life-threatening condition when the aorta, the main vessel carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body, becomes enlarged or bulges due to a weakening of its walls. The problem can be treated if it is detected in time.
