14 dead, 126 hurt on Polish roads over New Year’s

Fourteen people were killed and 126 injured in 105 accidents on Polish roads over the New Year’s travel period, according to police statistics.

Police say they stopped 406 drunk drivers across the country on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

In all, officers were called out more than 33,000 times during those two days to deal with emergencies on the roads and elsewhere, Antoni Rzeczkowski from the country’s General Police Headquarters, told Polish Radio's IAR news agency on Wednesday.

Thirty-six people were killed and 541 injured in 443 accidents on Polish roads during the long Christmas weekend, according to police statistics.
