In a New Year's Eve address, President Duda thanked Poles for celebrating the centennial of national independence with a bang in an “exceptional” 2018.

He noted that Poland was now entering an election year, with voters slated to choose their representatives for the European Parliament and then head to the ballot box in elections to national parliament.

Duda said that upcoming election campaigns would provide an opportunity for a wide-ranging debate on the future course of the country.

Poland’s political parties are gearing up for an electoral marathon, with European elections scheduled for May 26 and a national parliamentary ballot due in the autumn, followed by a presidential vote in 2020.

The European Parliament is the directly elected parliamentary institution of the 28-nation European Union, of which Poland has been a member since 2004.
