Polish bishop Tadeusz Pieronek dies aged 84

Polish bishop Tadeusz Pieronek has died at the age of 84, a spokesman for the country’s Roman Catholic Church said on Thursday.

A professor of canon law and a significant religious figure, Pieronek was secretary-general of the Polish Episcopal Conference, the central authority of the Catholic Church in Poland, from 1993 to 1998.
He served as rector of the Papal Academy of Theology in the southern Polish city of Kraków from 1998 to 2004 and helped negotiate Poland’s Concordat agreement with the Vatican in the 1990s.
Born on October 24, 1934, in Radziechowy, southern Poland, Pieronek was ordained a priest in 1957 after graduating from a seminary in Kraków.
He died in his Kraków home on Thursday evening, public broadcaster TVP reported.
