Police last week stepped up patrols on major roads across the country as people headed off for Christmas break.

Officers were paying special attention to the speed at which vehicles traveled during the holiday period. They were also checking to make sure drivers were sober.

Police say they stopped 1,275 drunk drivers during their Safe Christmas Weekend road safety campaign, which lasted from December 21 to 26.

During the same period last year, 55 people died and 682 were injured in 558 accidents on Polish roads, Antoni Rzeczkowski from the country’s General Police Headquarters told Polish Radio's IAR news agency on Thursday.
