Officers will be paying special attention to the speed at which vehicles travel during the holiday period, according to Radosław Kobryś from the National Police Headquarters.

Traffic police will also be checking to make sure drivers are sober and that their cars are in good condition, public broadcaster TVP Info reported on Saturday.

The Safe Christmas Weekend road safety campaign runs until Wednesday, when many Poles will be returning home from the holiday break.

During last year’s Christmas break, 42 people were killed and 447 injured in 373 accidents on Polish roads, according to police statistics.
