The 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, also known as COP24, runs in the southern Polish city of Katowice until December 14.

The summit aims to adopt a roadmap for putting into practice the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which aims to slow climate change, public broadcaster Polish Radio reported.

The Paris deal set a target of keeping the rise in average global temperatures to “well below” 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times, and ideally to 1.5 degrees.

Polish Deputy Environment Minister Michał Kurtyka, on behalf of his country, on Sunday took over the presidency of the UN climate summit in Katowice.

Poland will hold the presidency until the next such summit, the COP25, in 2019.

Poland has hosted the annual UN climate change conference twice already, in Warsaw in 2013 and in Poznań in 2008.

Experts and politicians from the Three Seas Initiative, a regional cooperation drive by countries between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic Seas, gathered in Warsaw last month to come up with a common stand on environmental issues ahead of the Katowice climate summit.

Poland has temporarily reinstated border controls ahead of the United Nations conference.
