Ahead of COP24, the 14th Conference of Youth climate summit was held at the Silesian University in Katowice.
COY14 is a three-day international summit which precedes the deliberations of the United Nations Conference for climate change – COP24.
María Fernanda Espinosa, President of the United Nations General Assembly, Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and Michał Kurtyka, Secretary of State in the Environment Ministry who assumes the function of President of COP24, took part in the COY14 concluding session.
The meeting discussed key climate policy issues of both regional and global dimensions. The young participants spoke about ocean pollution, methods for reaching the sustainable development goals, and social aspects of climate change, among other topics.
Before moving on to preside at the opening session of COP24, Deputy Minister for Environment Michał Kurtyka attended the COY14 summit. As he told the participants "When you are young, you are creative and innovative. The international community needs both features as living organisms need fresh air. We need them in science, politics, and business, so that the world can develop in a sustainable and fair way".
The aim of COY is to motivate youth to commit to fighting climate change and give them a space to brainstorm about global climate policies.
