Arrest warrant issued for Stalinist-era judge wanted in Poland

A court has issued an European arrest warrant for a Stalinist-era judge suspected of issuing unlawful death sentences to Polish underground fighters in the 1950s.

Stefan Michnik, who lives in Sweden, is suspected of committing 30 crimes in Warsaw in 1952 and 1953 “bearing the hallmarks of crimes against humanity,” the Polish public broadcaster’s tvp.info website reported.
Stefan Michnik is the step-brother of Adam Michnik, an intellectual and editor-in-chief of Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper.
Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro said that Stefan Michnik is one of over a hundred Stalinist-era judges who are still alive but who have never been brought to justice.
Ziobro said that officials wanted to bring Stefan Michnik back to Poland and put him before a court.
The decision to issue a European arrest warrant came after a request from Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), which is charged with prosecuting crimes against the Polish nation.
