While making the announcement on Tuesday, Investment and Development Minister Jerzy Kwieciński said Katowice was a strong Polish candidate selected by the government from a list of four cities, over Warsaw, Łódź and Poznań.

He added that Katowice combined an industrial tradition with post-industrial architecture and strong aspirations to be a dynamic centre of culture and business.

The World Urban Forum is a major United Nations conference on cities that is held every two years.

The deadline for submitting host city bids for the 11th World Urban Forum is mid-January. The UN is expected to announce the host city in April.

The 10th World Urban Forum will take place in 2020 in Abu Dhabi.
