The incident at the Polish capital’s Metro Centrum station occurred during the morning rush hour after the escalator suddenly picked up speed as it moved down at around 7:20 am, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

It cited a spokesman for the Warsaw Metro as saying that the malfunction caused people to tumble down and into one another.

Four required medical attention, the spokesman, Maciej Czerski, said.

The elevator was shut down pending an investigation into the causes of the incident, IAR reported, citing the spokesman.
