President Andrzej Duda led ceremonies at the Powązki Military Cemetery in the Polish capital where the "Glory to the Polish Airmen" monument was unveiled to coincide with milestones including the 100th anniversary of Poland's air force.

Speaking at the event, Duda referred to the sacrifice of the nation’s airmen who fought heroically in a war against the Russian Bolsheviks in 1920 and then defended their country against invading German troops in the autumn of 1939. He also mentioned those who fought the Germans in the 1940 Battle of Britain.

During the weekend, a two-day international air show in Radom, south of Warsaw, celebrated the 100th year of the Polish air force and the centennial of Poland regaining independence.

In April, a museum highlighting the role of Polish pilots in the Battle of Britain during World War II opened near Częstochowa, southern Poland.
