Their 14-year-old brother was washed up on the shore near where the children were swimming in Darłówko, northwestern Poland, on Tuesday afternoon, but died in hospital the next day, despite successful attempts to resuscitate him on the beach.
A number of rescue teams and divers on Thursday continued to look for his 11-year-old sister and 13-year-old brother underwater and along a breakwater after foul weather made the search impossible on Wednesday.
One of the divers said: “We will check … if the children were not squeezed under the rocks” in the breakwater.
A family of six from western Poland had been holidaying at the unpatrolled beach in Darłówko.
The children disappeared under the waves after their mother left them unattended as she headed to a toilet with her two-year-old. The children’s father was elsewhere on the beach at the time.
Police and prosecutors are investigating the tragedy. The woman faces negligent homicide charges, according to reports. (vb/pk)
