A total of 291 people have drowned nationwide since the beginning of April, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

According to officials, alcohol is among the main causes of swimmers drowning in Poland.

Deaths most often occur in bathing areas not patrolled by lifeguards, according to the IAR news agency.

Authorities have warned the public to take precautions amid a heatwave in which temperatures are expected to reach up to 35 degrees Celsius.
