“If necessary, we will amend the budget because paying out such compensation to farmers is of fundamental importance to us," Morawiecki told reporters on Tuesday.

The government has earmarked PLN 799.5 million (EUR 187m, USD 219m) this year to help Polish farmers and fish farms hit by drought and flooding.

Amid scorching temperatures, almost 65 percent of arable land in Poland has been affected by drought, according to state news agency PAP.

Aid will be granted in the form of subsidies for agricultural producers who have lost at least 30 percent of a crop due to drought or flooding.

Meanwhile, Warsaw has asked the European Commission to help Polish farmers.
