Free legal aid will become available to anyone in Poland who needs it under changes signed into law by President Andrzej Duda on Monday.

Hitherto, only those registered as unemployed, disabled or retired were eligible to free legal support.

Under the new law, anyone who says they cannot afford to cover the cost of legal services will be able to access free legal counsel and mediation.

“The main aim of this amendment was accessibility,” Duda said.

The changes are set to enter into force at the beginning of next year. (vb/pk)
