The leader of Poland’s ruling conservatives has said there is no need for changes in the government before parliamentary elections scheduled for next autumn -- unless “something extraordinary” happens.

Jarosław Kaczyński, head of the Law and Justice party which swept to power in late 2015, told public broadcaster TVP on Thursday: "I think that there shouldn’t be any such changes, that at the moment we should act in a stable manner."

He added: “I do not think there is any rationale for any changes. Unless something extraordinary happens.”

Prime Minister Beata Szydło tendered her resignation in December, halfway through her Law and Justice government’s term in office and after weeks of media reports of an impending Cabinet reshuffle.

She was replaced by Mateusz Morawiecki, a former finance minister.

Commentators said that the change reflected the government’s determination to focus on the economy.

Law and Justice came to power in October 2015 in a landslide election victory, ending eight years of a government led by its arch-rival, the Civic Platform, now Poland's largest opposition group.
