The rapid increase in the bacteria’s population has changed the water’s colour and may produce toxins.
Officials have urged people to stay out of the unusually coloured and foul-smelling sea and warned that animals and plants should also not come into contact with the contaminated water.
Blue-green algae can produce toxins which can lead to skin irritation, watery eyes, vomiting, diarrhoea and fever. (vb)
