Toxic algae forces Polish beach closures
PR dla Zagranicy
About a dozen beaches on Poland’s Baltic coast are closed due to blue-green algae blooms.
The rapid increase in the bacteria’s population has changed the water’s colour and may produce toxins.
Officials have urged people to stay out of the unusually coloured and foul-smelling sea and warned that animals and plants should also not come into contact with the contaminated water.
Blue-green algae can produce toxins which can lead to skin irritation, watery eyes, vomiting, diarrhoea and fever. (vb)
