Polish president likely to seek re-election in 2020: conservative leader

Kaczyński, who heads Poland’s ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, said there was a high likelihood that his party would field Duda as its candidate in the next presidential election.

However, the final decision will be made by the party’s political board, possibly at a convention, Kaczyński told Sieci weekly in an interview.

According to a June poll, Duda would beat former Prime Minister Donald Tusk in the second round of Poland’s 2020 presidential election if both entered the race.

Roughly 52.5 percent of those surveyed by researcher Instytut Badań Pollster in mid-June said they would vote for Duda, who has been Poland's president since 2015, while 47.5 percent said they would support Tusk, who was Poland's prime minister from 2007 to 2014 and is now head of the European Council, a key European Union leadership position.

The survey, commissioned by the Super Express tabloid, was conducted on June 13 and 14 on a sample of 1,043 respondents.
