A total of 231 people have drowned in Poland from the beginning of the year until Monday, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
The figure is 50 percent more than during the same period last year. One in five of the victims consumed alcohol before entering the water, according to IAR.
The safety campaign is being backed by Polish swimming champion Paweł Korzeniowski.
"After drinking alcohol, people do not think rationally. Bravado kicks in, which can result in a lifetime of disability,” Korzeniowski said.
