Ex-finance minister called for questioning as pyramid scheme probed in Poland

Former Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski has been summoned for questioning as a special Polish parliamentary commission probes a major pyramid scheme, according to reports.

The Amber Gold pyramid scheme saw thousands of Poles cheated out of their savings from 2009 to 2012 when Rostowski was finance minister.
The parliamentary commission on Thursday summoned Rostowski and 12 other witnesses who were once linked to the finance ministry and the country’s tax inspection authorities, Poland’s PAP news agency reported, quoting Jarosław Krajewski, deputy head of the commission.
The hearings are scheduled to take place in June and July, according to PAP.
Rostowski served as finance minister as well as deputy prime minister in a government led by Donald Tusk.
Amber Gold had promised customers high returns on investments in gold, but the firm folded in August 2012.
According to criminal records, 19,000 customers were swindled out of a combined sum of PLN 851 million (EUR 200 million) at the time.
