Poland’s ruling conservatives still way ahead: survey

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party is backed by 36 percent of voters, while opposition groupings trail a long way behind, according to a new poll.

The survey by pollster Kantar Public found that the opposition Civic Platform (PO) party, which led the previous government, was backed by 23 percent of people who said they would vote if parliamentary elections took place in April.
Compared to a similar survey in March, support for PiS dropped by 1 percentage point, while support for the Civic Platform rose by 1 percentage point.
The left-wing Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) was in third place on 7 percent in the new survey. This last party is now outside parliament.
The Kukiz'15 grouping was fourth on 6 percent, according to the survey, while Nowoczesna (Modern) was on 5 percent.
Other parties would not exceed the 5 percent threshold needed to make it into the Polish parliament, according to the poll.
Fifteen percent of respondents who said they would vote could not say for whom they would cast their ballot.
The Kantar Public survey was conducted April 6-11 on a nationwide representative sample of 1,024 adults.
The conservative Law and Justice party swept to power in a landslide election win in late 2015.
