A spike in passenger numbers is expected to last until Tuesday morning.

Long-distance connections between the largest Polish cities are in particular set to be geared up to carry more travellers.

Marta Ziemska from PKP Intercity said the company was encouraging passengers to buy tickets online in order to avoid queues at ticket offices.

“The sooner we know about interest in a connection, the faster we will be able to react,” she added.

Travellers can expect to see additional staff at large railway stations informing passengers about changes in routes.
