Ryszard Terlecki, a deputy Speaker of the Polish parliament and a member of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, told a conference: "We say very firmly: we do not want a two-speed EU.”

He added: “We do not want to return to a time when Europe was divided. And if Germany, France, the strongest players in the EU, decide that such a division is the most convenient option for them and push it through, then we say: We will mobilise in Eastern and Central Europe."

Terlecki was speaking at the 11th Europe-Ukraine Forum in Jasionka, south-eastern Poland.

He said that countries in Central and Eastern Europe were “very attached to their sovereignty” and respect values “which today in Western Europe are being rejected by the liberal establishment."

He added: "In our part of Europe we respect religion, while in Western Europe religion is disregarded or even pushed out of the public sphere."
