Ski breaks take their toll in Poland

The Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue Service (TOPR) has reported more than 1,500 accidents during this year’s winter school break in Poland.

The winter holidays are when Polish children and their parents traditionally head off to the ski slopes.
The accident figures registered by TOPR are similar to previous years, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
The majority of dangerous incidents occurred on ski slopes, IAR added.
Hospitals busy
Some 1,200 of these were serious accidents that required hospital treatment, Andrzej Marasek from TOPR told the agency.
The most common causes were falls and collisions with other skiers or snowboarders, according to IAR.
In total, rescuers were called out over 2,140 times from December 1, the start of the winter season, the news agency reported.
During this year's winter break, TOPR rescuers used a helicopter 14 times.
The winter school holidays ended in Poland at the weekend.
