General August Emil Fieldorf (nom de guerre “Nil”), a hero of the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1920 and of World War II, was arrested by the communist authorities in 1950. In April 1952, he was sentenced to death.

He was hanged 65 years ago, on 24 February 1953, in the Rakowiecka Prison in Warsaw. His body was buried in an unknown location. No one responsible for the crime has been brought to account.

In 2006, General Fieldorf posthumously received the Order of the White Eagle, the highest Polish state distinction.

General Fieldorf was one of the most prominent Polish soldiers who continued to fight for independence after a Soviet-backed communist regime came to power in Poland after World War II.

The commemorative coin dedicated to Fieldorf has a face value of PLN 1. Its price is PLN 130 (EUR 31, USD 38).

The coin bears images of the general, a red-and-white Polish flag and the inscription: "They behaved as they should have done."
