Szydło tendered her resignation on Thursday evening, halfway through her Law and Justice government’s term in office.

Polish President Andrzej Duda on Friday named Finance Minister Mateusz Morawiecki as prime minister-designate, tasking him with forming a new government.

Commentators have said that the upcoming change of prime minister reflects the conservative Law and Justice government’s determination to focus on the economy over the next two years.

Deputy Culture Minister Jarosław Sellin told public broadcaster Polish Radio on Saturday that Szydło “is remaining in the government. She will be responsible for social policy, because here she has had the most successes."

As prime minister, Szydło oversaw the introduction of the government’s popular flagship policy of giving families new welfare handouts.
