Antoni Macierewicz told state broadcaster Polish Radio that some of these incidents were part of attacks that were global or targeting countries across Europe.

He said hackers had recently attempted to install malware on Polish defence ministry IT systems in order to access data.

Macierewicz added that cyber attacks are not just attempts to infiltrate computer systems but may also be attempts to immobilise critical infrastructure, which he said could lead to "paralysis in the functioning of the state.”

Last week Macierewicz announced that Poland was to have a “cyber army” numbering at least 1,000 soldiers within several years capable of waging warfare in cyberspace.

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło has announced that a new department of cyber security would be set up in her office.
