Szydło heads a government formed after the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party came to power in a landslide election win in late 2015.

Last year Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban received the forum’s Man of the Year award for the impact he had on Central Europe.

Two years ago the award went to PiS chief Jarosław Kaczyński.

Previous winners include Pope John Paul II, Lech Wałęsa and Donald Tusk.

Almost 4,000 guests including top politicians and the heads of major state-owned companies are expected in the southern Polish resort of Krynica-Zdrój for the annual economic forum.

The international conference, billed as the largest event of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe, runs from Tuesday to Thursday.

Among the issues that were to be debated on the first day are the restoration of economic growth in the European Union, and the role of the state in building an innovative economy.
