The tremor struck 900 metres underground at the Murcki-Staszic mine at 4:47am, after the end of a shift.

"Seven miners reported injuries after emerging to the surface, and two have already been transferred to hospital, but I know they were conscious,” said Tomasz Głogowski, a spokesman for Polska Grupa Górnicza (Polish Mining Group).

Głogowski added that experts would assess damage to the mine “but it is too early for that at the moment because of seismic activity.”

He said that the tremor was strong enough to be felt on the surface, adding: "There were phone calls from worried residents."
